'Asiong Salonga' wins big at MMFF awards

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Laguna Governor ER Ejercito’s film “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” bagged 11 awards, including Best Picture, during the 37th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Awards Night on Wednesday.

“Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” was awarded Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (John Regala), Best Screenplay (Roi Inglesias and Rey Ventura), Best Production Design, Best Original Theme Song and Best Cinematography (Carlo Mendoza).

The film was also honored with the prestigious Gatpuno Villegas Cultural Award.

Despite the controversial ruling disqualifying Regal Film's “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”, its lead star Maricel Soriano was named as Best Actress.

The Best Actor award went to Dingdong Dantes for his role in “Segunda Mano”.

For her supporting role in the film “My Househusband: Ikaw na!”, Eugene Domingo took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy.

Kapamilya child star Bugoy Cariño, meanwhile, was named as the competition’s Best Child Performer for his role in “Shake, Rattle & Roll XIII”.

The year's Best Float award was given to “Ang Panday 2”.

Under the new wave category, ABS-CBN talent JM de Guzman of the film “Pintakasi” bagged the Indie Film Best Actor award, while the Best Indie Film Actress went to “HIV” star Iza Calzado.

Best Original Theme Song - "La Paloma" by Ely Buendia (Asiong Salonga)
Best Cinematography - Carlo Mendoza (Asiong Salonga)

Best New Wave Full-length Indie Film - “Pintakasi”

Special Jury Prize for Technical Excellence - “Biyahe ni Barbie” (College of St. Benilde)
Gender Sensitivity Award (Student Category) - “Speechless” (Miriam College)

Special Awards

Lifetime Achievement Award - Eddie Garcia

During the awards night, the MMFF also expressed its intention to help the victims of tropical storm Sendong.

The MMFF made a donation to the flood-stricken population in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City.

The 37th MMFF Awards Night will air on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday, 10:45 p.m.
