The Philippine Opera Company, home of the country’s premiere opera singers, proudly presents “HARANA” on August 28, 2008 --- 8:00 p.m. at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium, RCBC Tower, Ayala Avenue, Makati City.
Eight of the country’s most awarded classically trained singers will come together in “HARANA” in a rare display of vocal powers. The 4 male and female singers features the golden voices of sopranos Ana Feleo, Deeda Barretto, Karla Gutierrez, Florence Aguilar, tenors Juan Alberto Gaerlan, Sherwin Sozon and baritones Jack Salud and Lawrence Jatayna.
The repertoire includes timeless classics like, “Bituing Marikit”, “Dahil Sa Isang Bulaklak”, “Pamaypay ng Maynila”, “Iyo Kailan Pa Man”, “Kalesa”, “Ang Maya”, “Ano Kaya Ang Kapalaran”, “Dumbele”, “Ay Salidumay”, “Waray-Waray”, “Sa Kabukiran”, “Manang Biday”, “Atin Cu Pung Singsing”, “Pobreng Alindahaw”, “Saan Ka Man Naroroon,”, “Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal”, Hindi Kita Malimot” and many more.
The word “HARANA” is the Tagalog (the predominant Philippine dialect) name of a traditional form of courtship in which a man woos a woman’s affection by singing underneath her window.
Produced in cooperation with National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Yuchengco Group of Companies and Narda’s, “HARANA” promises to take its audience to a spectacular musical journey showcasing the very best of Philippine music. From the indigenous Cordilleras and pre-colonial to contemporary and fusion, each musical suite is theatrically presented with authenticity, originality and visual excitement.
The creation of each Harana suite is a product of thorough research with the commitment to preserve indigenous Philippine music and its appropriate dance and folklore. It also aims to restructure and enhance these research findings to evolve repertoires suited to the demands of contemporary theater; and to promote international goodwill through performances at home and abroad. The result is an absolute feast to the senses.
Harana’s featured performers are soloists in their own right. Florence Aguilar graduated magna cum laude in voice from the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. She has performed with Singapore Lyric Opera and Philharmonic Chamber of Choir of Singapore. Deeda Barretto is a winner of an international competition in Aberdeen, Scotland and a grand prize-winner in the national competition of the Kundiman Fiesta. Ana Feleo was the 2007 Aliw Awardee for Best Musical Actress. She received her education at the University of the Philippines’ College of Music and has recently returned from her training in The Juilliard School. Karla Gutierrez attained her Bachelor of Music Degree, Majoring in Voice from the UP College of Music and pursued further studies in Opera Interpretations with the Accademia Internazionale delle Arti in Rome, Italy. She has performed leads in various musicals and opera productions. Juan Alberto Gaerlan completed his Professional Diploma Studies in Western Opera at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He had his debut with the Singapore Lyric Opera and the China Philharmonic Orchestra and was a frequent soloist of the Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra. Lawrence Jatayna graduated from the University of the Philiippines’ College of Music and is the leading baritone in the country. He has been part of several productions of Singapore Lyric Opera. Jack Salud is a resident artist of the Philippine Opera Company. He was part of the Tribute to Pavarotti show, which was held at Fort Bonifacio. He has done several musicals and corporate events here and abroad. Sherwin Sozon has performed in concerts and played lead roles in various musical productions.
