August 26, 2008
(Last Tuesday of August)

Conspiracy Garden Cafe

Entrance fee: P150.

Featuring Susan Fernandez, Pete Lacaba, Raffy Garcia, and Senator Dick Gordon, with Ferdie Borja at the piano. Plus surprise guests. Open mike after the show.

Susan Fernandez, in addition to singing regularly at Bros Mustache bar, writes a column in Filipino for "Abante" and is a professor of sociology at the Ateneo de Manila. She recently underwent an operation for first-stage cancer of the ovary, which is why we have joined the many fund-raisers and benefit shows for her treatment. Her album of Pinoy folk and protest songs, HABI AT HIMIG, will be on sale at Conspiracy on Salinawit night.

Pete, Raffy, and Dick were at the Ateneo at about the same time and had National Artists for Literature Rolando Tinio and Bien Lumbera as professors.

At the Ateneo, Rolando, Bien, and Pete--together with Jesuit priest Edmundo Martinez and students Edgar Alegre and Antonio Samson--wrote poems in Tagalog/Pilipino/Filipino that were published in Heights, the campus literary journal, under the title "6 Bagay Poets." That informal grouping back in the Sixties has now come to be enshrined in literary scholarship as the Bagay Movement, or Kilusang Bagay, in Philippine poetry.

Rolando's salinawit (before the term was coined) first came out in the album CELESTE LEGASPI SINGS TRANSLATIONS BY ROLANDO TINIO, originally released in the 1970s, recently reissued. Bien's salinawit of "Bridge over Troubled Water" is in HAJJI ALEJANDRO AT IBA PANG TUNOG PINOY, originally released in the 1970s.

In addition to songs, Rolando, Bien, and Pete have also translated and adapted poems and plays into Filipino. Bien's translations of four theater classics--Federico Garcia Lorca's "Bodas de Sangre," Maksim Gorky's "Enemy," William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," and Nick Joaquin's "Portrait of the Artist as Filipino"--came out as four separate books last year, part the "Entablado Klasiko" series.
