MONET SILVESTRE, KRINA CAYABYAB and band BAIHANA, Winners of the BOY KATINDIG Songwriting & Jazz Band Competition

Former Tux and DV8 music director, keyboardist and vocalist MONET SILVESTRE; singer/ songwriter KRINA CAYABYAB and her band BAIHANA were the winners of the Grand Finals of the first-ever BOY KATINDIG Jazz Competition held at the Hard Rock Café last Saturday.

Silvestre, who is more popularly known as a mentor at ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Dream Academy, won BEST ORIGINAL JAZZ COMPOSITION for his song “PUSO’T PAG-IBIG.” With DaMoRe Trio, he interpreted Katindig’s 1980 jazz fusion release “After Midnight” from the After Midnight album. Silvestre is also a professional songwriter and educator.

“The voice is also an instrument,” remarked composer, keyboardist and jazz icon Boy Katindig, as he handed out the award for MOST OUTSTANDING INSTRUMENTALIST to singer/ songwriter/  arranger Krina Cayabyab, the daughter of famous composer and musician Ryan Cayabyab.
Krina’s band Baihana was awarded BEST JAZZ BAND. Baihana performed Cayabyab’s original “Talk to Me,” and also interpreted Boy’s 1983 hit “Toss the Coin and See” from the In My Inner Fantasies album.

Sharing vocal chores with Krina at Baihana are Melinda Torre (alto) and Anna Achacoso (soprano 2). The other members of the band are Tim Cada, guitars; Adriel Bote, keyboards; Joshua Royeca, bass; Karmina Santiago, drums.

The band will join Katindig at theWorld Youth Jazz Festival in Putrajaya, Malaysia on May 2013.

Real estate broker DAVID BERK whose song “JUBILEE”  was set to Latin Jazz Music and with band Connect 4, did a cover of “Midnight Lady” from the Midnight Lady album  which was released in 1978 under the Horizon label of A & W records and which won for Katindig the Best Instrumental Composition at the Himig Awards.

Graphic designer, painter and recording artist TRICIA GARCIA’s song was the bluesy tune FAT LADY. She did a cover of the Katindig original “My Thoughts of You” from the Groovin’ High CD.

Ateneo’s BS Applied Physics major NICOLE CALO’s did the funky “DUGONG MAHARLIKA,” and covered “Manila on My Mind”  with Mann Atti. This cut was originally released on the Love Fusion LP in 1982 (or long before Nicole was born!)

Singer/ songwriter and Victory copywriter/ copy editor CHIQUE ARCILLA rendered the Brazilian-Samba “HEAVEN ON EARTH IS YOU” with Butter Jam and covered Katindig’s 1982 ditty “(I) Love Lovin’ You” from the Love Fusion CD.

Orchestra vibraphone player JAIMAR PALISPIS performed the Latin jazz song “INVENTIONES”  with Camerata Jazz, and did a cover of  “What I Feel” which was released in the “After Midnight” album in 1980.

With his band JC3, another orchestra reliable, double-bass player and educator JC MAGSALIN did his smooth jazz “A FULL LIFE,” and a cover of “Voce E Minha Vida,” released in the 2005 Groovin’ High album.

Hosted by Wayne Enaje (a.k.a. Brother Wayne), the competition boasts of judges such as Mean Marcial, Marketing Manager/Entertainment Officer of Hard Rock Cafe Makati; Willie Villar, producer of A&W International; Atek Jacinto, composer and founder of the legendary New Dimensions,Circus Band and Rage Band; Mike Jamir, former A&R of A&W International, currently, a producer for independent record label Pilipinas Productions; Bert de Leon, TV Director and artist manager, and the producer of the first-ever recorded jazz fusion record on 45, Sticky;  Rico J. Puno, The Total Entertainer, recording artist/hit maker; Serafin Pua, owner/manager of famed jazz club, Birds of the Same Feather John Lesaca, jazz violinist, Chairman of Intellectual Property Coalition and Vice-Chairman/President of the Asosasyong Musikong Pilipino; Jun Latonio, composer/arranger and Boy Katindig.

The competition was produced by KoolKat Productions Manila, Veda Productions, Cornucopia Entertainment and Hard Rock Café Makati and is supported by Radio High 105.9, 105.1 Crossover, City of Makati, Agimat, 8 August Studio and 8th Note Studio.  It is also co-presented by the Honorable Members of the Makati City Council with the participation of Yupangco Music Yamaha and Lazer Music Rhythm Tech.

Boy Katindig was signed up by A & W Records International under the Horizon label (of the Villars) with his four best-selling records: “Midnight Lady” in 1978, “Aftermidnight” in 1980, “Love Fusion” in 1981, and “In My Inner Fantasies” in 1982.  He moved to the US in 1986 after a two-year stint in Malaysia. He produced “In Time” in 1990 which featured jazz luminaries Abe Laboriel, Brandon Fields, Russell Freeman, Gerald Albright who all played his original compositions. He produced “Journey to Love” in 1993.

In 1995, Hawaii-based Michael Paulo of the Al Jarreau Band discovered him and took him in in his label Noteworthy Records. He toured with Pauline Wilson. He produced “Groovin’ High” in 2005 and became the resident tour pianist of smooth jazz artist Paul Taylor. He also performed with Eric Marienthal and Regina Belle.  

Boy has received a number of awards, some of which were Best Instrumental Composition for “Midnight Lady” by Himig Awards; Best Jazz & Best Performance in Jazz Composition for “It’s Still September” – both from the Cecil Music Awards Foundation; Best Vocal Jazz Composition and Best Vocal Performance for “Capture the Changes” (sung by Jacque Magno); and Best Jazz Group for Boy Katindig Band which was granted by the Aliw Awards Foundation for three consecutive years.  His most recent prize was the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry’s (PARI) 23rd Awit Awards in 2010.

Among the more popular songs which he composed include “Away from You” which was performed by Jennifer Ramos and revived by Christian Bautista; and “I’ll Always Stay in Love this Way” which was revived by Luke Mejares, Jed Madela, Nina and even Lea Salonga.
