Parokya ni Edgar rises as the big winner at the 2012 MYX Music Awards

MANILA, Philippines – A ‘70s retro-themed awards show with glittering gold motifs and lights complete with a hanging disco mirror ball was the setting for the 2012 MYX Music Awards held last night at the Music Museum in Greenhills, San Juan.  A multitude of artists, from pop and rap solo singers to R&B groups and rock acts, came in their bellbottoms, flowing flowery numbers, bohemian headdresses and wide collared suits to add to the gathering’s festive air.

Veteran novelty-rock and pop band Parokya Ni Edgar came out as the big winner in last night’s celebration, bagging five awards in all including the popular Favorite Artist and Favorite Group, proving the band’s enduring draw. The band, whose members were teased by VJ’s Nikki Gil and Iya Villania for being so “into the ‘70s” (they came in their casual shirt and jeans), also bagged the Favorite Song award for “Pangarap Lang Kita,” and Favorite Collaboration for “One Hit Combo” with Gloc 9, tracks from their most recent album “Middle-aged Juvenile Novelty Pop Rockers,” and added Favorite MYX Live Performance to their bragging rights.

Rapper Gloc 9 came in second with two nods to his name for Favorite Urban Video for “Elmer” featuring Jac Dionisio of Kissjane, and the Favorite Male Artist award. Yeng Constantino took home the Favorite Female Artist plum.

A ‘70s feel was prevalent throughout the evening. VJ’s Gil and Villania shared that the theme was a reference to “the golden age of OPM in the ‘70s” and said that, hopefully, “looking back on the hits of the era will inspire a new golden age” of originality in a music scene inundated with covers and remakes. The evening also featured performances by several luminaries from the era in the guise of the “‘70s Supergroup,” featuring Snaffu Rigor, Nonoy Tan and Mon Espia (from Cinderella, Labuyo, etc.), that did a spot-on medley of the Manila Sound hits with Kyla (looking natural and glowing in her floral-top and bell-bottoms combo and Jaclyn Smith-inspired hair), Christian Bautista, Sitti (who also scored points for her “That 70’s Show” get-up), Champ Lui Pio, Juris, Ebe and Karylle.

But their production number couldn’t out-retro the night’s honored guest, namely Mr. Ryan Cayabyab, who was awarded the Myx Magna Award (a recognition reserved) for excellence and contribution to OPM. The ensuing presentation was highlighted by a classy treatment of Mr. C’s biggest hits in a rousing performance by The Company, Geneva Cruz, who reprised her Smokey Mountain phase with “Kailan,” Jed Madela who sang “Paraiso,” Regine Velasquez, who thrilled with “Araw-Gabi” and “Tuwing Umuulan Ay Kapiling Ka.” Capping all of it was an appearance of legendary balladeer Basil Valdez who sang his own Cayabyab-penned hit “Nais Ko.”

Other memorable points of the evening included presenter Jon Santos cracking the whole house with his hilarious Senator Miriam bit, newcomer Zia Quizon bagging a well-deserved Favorite New Artist award, and Francis Reyes’ short but moving tribute to rock icon Karl Roy (vocalist for Kapatid, P.O.T. and Advent Call ) who passed away in the early hours of March 13, 2012.

Meanwhile, Pupil aced the coveted Favorite Music Video Award. The band as well as director Jason Tan truly deserve the accolade (you try emptying the whole of EDSA for a video shoot) as their winning video for “20 / 20” brought the focus back on creative tinkering and even wild ideas when it comes to making music videos.
