Just a thought: Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it. – Henry David Thoreau

MANILA, Philippines -- Tunog Natin 3: Back on track is “Tunog Natin,” now on its third installment following a successful two-part series that gathered huge crowds within Avida premises recently.

The third leg of “Tunog Natin,” a tribute to Original Pilipino Music as we know it today, takes place on Oct. 21 at the Market! Market! in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Project manager Myrus, himself a singer, recording artist and gold record awardee, says this weekend’s line-up features artists representing various genres: Pop, rock and R&B.

Those in the line-up include Noel Cabangon, Jaya, Miguel Escueta, Kenyo, Tricia Garcia, Franco, Letter Day Story, The Dawn, Moonstar 88 among others.

“Tunog Natin” is an advocacy of Avida Land in whose premises the free concert series is being held. It might be a good idea if “Tunog Natin” performances can be recorded live and packaged into a series of albums, the proceeds of which could go to the singers’ organization OPM.

OPM, currently headed by Ogie Alcasid, can then launch songwriting contests to further propagate our own music.

True Standing:
These days, audiences and even the media are at a quandary getting to the bottom of so-called TV ratings results.

Both ABS-CBN and GMA-7 claim superiority in ratings as they cite the latest figures and results of surveys over certain periods and set areas. Manila is not just Manila but Metro Manila.

Metro Manila isn’t just Metro Manila, but has now grown to become Mega Manila, which includes nearby provinces as far as Cavite and Bulacan.

Talk of TV ratings surfaced during one of our recent out of town gigs with fellow entertainment writers. The consensus was that, based on our coverages of stars from both networks, people in the provinces tend to be more familiar with actors and actresses from channel 2 than they are with those from channel 7.

It may not be a scientific observation, but one deduced only from audience appreciation or applause or even subjective preference. Nonetheless, it may have some bearing of truth somehow which can help GMA in its campaign to further popularize its stars to the masses.

Now comes the results of Kantar Media’s TV survey in September as reported by ABS-CBN.

Thirteen out of the top 15 most watched programs in September were on ABS-CBN, sweeping the top 10 slots. GMA’s top rating locally produced program, “Amaya,” only ranked 15th.

“MMK,” which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, topped the list with an average national TV rating of 32.8 percent also dominating the weekend programming, while “100 Days to Heaven” came in second with a rating of 32 percent and remains to be the number one weekday program.

The live airing of the prestigious “Miss Universe 2011” in Sao Paolo, Brazil where Shamcey Supsup bagged the third runner-up honor, rated an unprecented 31 percent during daytime, heralding a new benchmark for a beauty pageant genre. This is in stark contrast to GMA-produced “Miss World” where the rival only rated 9.2 percent in primetime.

Meanwhile, “TV Patrol” is still the undisputed primetime newscast in the county as it earned an average TV rating of 28.1 percent vs GMA’s “24 Oras” (18.6 percent). “TV Patrol” also soared high to a rating of 32.6 percent Sept. 26 as the entire country braced for the coming of “Pedring.” “24 Oras,” on the other hand, rated at 22.4 percent during the same day.

ABS-CBN’s newest primetime offering “Nasaan Ka Elisa?” instantly rose to 7th spot with an average rating of 25.3 percent and consistently beating GMA’s “Munting Heredera” hitting only an average rating of 19.4 percent.

Other Kapamilya programs in the top 15 were “My Binondo Girl” (27.4 percent), “Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition” (26.4 percent), “Rated K” (24.6 percent), “Guns and Roses” (23.7 percent), “Pilipinas Got Talent” (22.8 percent), “Wansapanataym” (22.7 percent), “Maria La Del Barrio” (21.9 percent), and “Goin Bulilit” (20.9 percent).
