PABLO S. GOMEZ with friend Susan Roces |
MOVIE QUEEN Susan Roces describes komiks legend Pablo S. Gomez as a “multitalented and prolific writer.”
Another komiks master, Carlo J. Caparas, recalls: “He gave me my break in the industry.”
“He was kind and encouraging to new writers,” adds indie filmmaker Adolf Alix Jr.
A day after Christmas, Gomez passed away due to cardiac and pulmonary arrest.
He would have turned 80 next month, according to family friend Manny Buising.
In a career that spanned six decades, Gomez wrote over 300 komiks novels, many of which were turned into movies featuring some of the country’s top stars, including Carmen Rosales (“MN” and “ROTC”), Gloria Romero (“Kurdapya”), Lolita Rodriguez (“Gilda,” “Busabos”) and Susan Roces (“Susanang Daldal”).
Throughout his career, he also befriended the industry’s biggest actors, including Action King Fernando Poe Jr.
In one of his last interviews, Gomez told the Inquirer that he found it ironic, the way komiks was “enjoying a revival on television, the same medium that killed it.”
One of his works, “Machete,” is set to have a new TV version on GMA 7 with Aljur Abrenica as lead star.
Gomez’s remains will be cremated at 4 p.m. today at St. Peter Funeral Homes, Quezon Avenue, in Quezon City.
