SCALED-DOWN CAN ALSO BE STYLISH.

Best Actress-Drama winner (for “Dukot”) Iza Calzado was the first to point out: “This awards show is very relaxed.”

Handed out by the Entertainment Press Society, Inc., the Golden Screen Awards is seven years young.

Fashion-wise, the stars who attended the event at Teatrino in Greenhills last week underscored the night’s casual chic theme.

Iza, who had worn Grecian gowns at the Urian and Star awards nights, opted for a modish black dress by Jun Escario, and jewelry by Jul B. Dizon.

The actress and rocker-boyfriend Atticus King made a cool couple on the red carpet. But she confessed to having the jitters. After the program, she said, “It’s my first time to win Best Actress. My knees were shaking. Since I tend to panic and forget everything, I had codigo (for an acceptance speech) on my cell phone.”

She previously won Best Supporting Actress at the Urian for “Sigaw” and Breakthrough Actress at the Golden Screen for “Milan,” both in 2004.

Another first-time Best Actress winner was Eugene Domingo, who won in the Comedy/Musical category for “Kimmy Dora.”

“Who am I wearing? This is my costume on [the GMA 7 gag show] ‘Comedy Bar.’ I came straight from taping,” she said. It was by stylist John Paul Dizon.

Domingo described the high of winning, thus: “As if I’m floating.”

Just as jubilant was Best Supporting Actress Maria Isabel Lopez (for “Kinatay”).

“It feels like I’ve finally graduated after 26 years of schooling,” Lopez told Inquirer.

Lopez wore an outfit that she put together herself: a sarong skirt from Bali, Indonesia; a beaded tribal bag from Chang Mai, Thailand; and a purple top that she made herself. “I designed clothes for department stores before show biz.”

The men were as thrilled onstage as they were on the red carpet. Best Actor-Comedy winner Roderick Paulate, who donned a Barge Ramos barong, said his first Best Actor trophy—his third for “Ded na si Lolo”—made him feel “happy and honored.” He noted, “My two other awards for ‘Lolo’ were for Best Supporting Actor from Gawad Tanglaw and Pasado.”

Breakthrough Actor Zyrus Desamparado of “Engkwentro” was “shocked” by his first-ever award. “It was unexpected. I dedicate it to my family in Cebu.”

Lolo” also won Best Comedy Film and Best Screenplay for director Soxie Topacio.

Best Director Brillante Mendoza (who won for “Kinatay”) wore a Hugo Boss suit. “I feel validated ... to be appreciated not only by international journalists, but by their local counterparts here as well.”

Kinatay” also won Best Picture-Drama.
